Active Learning: Integrating Movement into the Classroom at Astor International School

At Astor International School, we recognise the importance of keeping students physically active and engaged throughout the school day, not just during designated break times. Movement is integrated into our lessons to promote an active, hands-on learning environment that enhances both physical and cognitive development.

Our classrooms are set up with multiple learning stations, encouraging students to move around as they engage in different activities. This helps break the monotony of sitting in one place for extended periods and stimulates their brains by interacting with a variety of resources and materials. Teachers also take students outside the classroom to collect data or observe real-world phenomena, bringing learning to life through exploration and active engagement.

In addition to working at learning stations, students at Astor often collaborate in groups and pairs, moving around to film videos, conduct interviews, or complete projects. This not only promotes physical activity but also fosters teamwork, communication, and critical thinking skills. Within the classroom, students frequently move between the carpet and their desks, switching between whole-group instruction and hands-on individual or small-group tasks. This keeps the atmosphere dynamic and ensures students remain focused and alert.

The benefits of incorporating movement into lessons are vast. Research shows that physical activity improves concentration, memory retention, and overall academic performance. By allowing students to move, we help them release pent-up energy, which can lead to improved focus during more stationary activities. The movement also stimulates creative thinking and helps students internalise and retain information through active engagement.

At Astor International School, we believe in fostering a holistic learning environment where students not only grow academically but also develop physically, emotionally, and socially. By keeping our students active during lessons, we aim to nurture well-rounded, energetic learners who are ready to take on challenges both inside and outside the classroom.
