Christmas is such a fabulous time of the year for everyone. In schools it is a great opportunity for us to link our learning to a very engaging topic. At Astor International School the Pre Primary and Primary class embarked on a journey a few weeks ago to make a reindeer pom pom.
The activity is not a quick one, it requires patience, concentration, and fine motor skills.
What you need:
2x circles with a middle smaller circle cut out. (Opening up a cereal box and using the cardboard to trace around a pot and then a glue stick for the middle circle will work)
Wool (around 1 role per pom pom)
2x googly eyes
1x red pom pom
Brown felt
2x toothpicks
Glue gun
Scissors
Reindeer Antlers Process:
Step 1: Cut 4 antler shapes out of brown felt.
Step 2: Use a hot glue gun to glue a toothpick to 2 antlers.
Step 3: Use a hot glue gun and glue an antler on top of the toothpick.
Pom Pom Process:
Step 1: Give the children 2 circles with smaller circles cut out the middle that had been put together and some wool wrapped from the outside and through the middle.
Step 2: The children then continue to wrap the wool around the outside and through the middle until they can not fit their finger through the middle.
Step 3: Use a very sharp pair of scissors to cut through the wool around the outside of the circle.
Step 4: Split the 2 cardboard circles so you tie a string around the centre (double knot) and leave a tail of string to make a loop on the outside of the pom pom.
Step 5: Rip the cardboard and pull it out and fluff the pom pom up.
Step 6: Use a hot glue gun to glue google eyes, mini pom pom nose and toothpick antlers to the pom pom.
