Valentine’s Day is a time to show appreciation and love for the special people in our lives. At Astor International School, the Year 5 and 6 students embraced the spirit of the day by crafting unique and personalised Valentine’s Day cards. Using a creative marbling technique, they designed beautiful handmade cards to gift to someone special at school or to their parents at home.

The Magic of Marbled Paper
Instead of using ordinary store-bought paper, the students experimented with a fascinating marbling method to create one-of-a-kind designs. This simple but effective technique involved using shaving foam and paint to produce swirling, colourful patterns on their paper. Not only was this process fun and engaging, but it also allowed each student to create a completely original and artistic background for their Valentine’s Day card.

Step-by-Step Crafting Process

The process of making marbled paper was as enjoyable as the final result. Here’s how the students created their masterpieces:
Preparing the Foam: Each student started with a tray filled with shaving foam, spreading it out evenly to create a smooth base.
Adding Colour: Next, they selected their preferred paint colours and dripped them onto the foam. Using skewers, they gently swirled the paint around to create intricate marbled patterns.
Transferring the Design: Once the marbling effect was achieved, students carefully placed a piece of paper onto the surface of the foam, pressing lightly to ensure full contact.
Revealing the Artwork: After a few moments, they lifted the paper off and used a piece of cardboard to scrape away the excess foam, revealing a stunning marbled design underneath.
Letting It Dry: The papers were set aside for a few minutes to dry, allowing the colours to set before being transformed into Valentine’s Day cards.
Personalising the Cards

With their marbled paper ready, the students then got creative with their card designs. Some chose to cut their paper into heart shapes, while others folded it into traditional cards. They added personal messages, drawings, and decorative embellishments such as glitter, stickers, and ribbons to enhance their creations. The end result was a collection of heartfelt and unique Valentine’s Day cards, each filled with love and care.
At Astor International School, hands-on activities like this help students develop artistic skills while also fostering meaningful connections with their classmates and families.
